A serological method for distinguishing coagulase-negative staphylococci from micrococci.

چکیده
Absorbed antisera prepared against heat-killed suspensions of a coagulase-negative staphylococcus and of a micrococcus were used in a slide-agglutination test. A collection of 176 coagulase-negative aerobic cocci, from which Staphylococcus aureus had been excluded, was classified into staphylococci and micrococci by means of the test for anaerobic utilization of glucose. Of 113 staphylococci, 99 reacted with the anti-staphylococcus serum, seven with the micrococcus serum, and seven with neither; of 63 micrococci, 55 reacted with the micrococcus serum and eight were untypable. Thus 161 of 176 strains (91%) were classifiable serologically, and in 154 of 161 instances (95%) the results of the serological and biochemical classification were in agreement.

Role of coagulase-negative staphylococci and micrococci in ocular disease.
Forty-nine strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci and 26 strains of micrococci isolated from human eyes were classified by the Baird-Parker system of 1966. The staphylococci belonged to subgroups II, III, IV, and V with one strain each in subgroups III and IV. However, when biotyped by Baird-Parker's system of 1974, less than 50% (23/49) of strains were typable and they belonged to biotype...
متن کاملCharacteristics of coagulase-negative staphylococci that help differentiate these species and other members of the family Micrococcaceae.
One hundred reference strains and 1,240 clinical isolates representing 26 species of the family Micrococcaceae were used to evaluate the potential of tests for synergistic hemolysis, adherence to glass, pyroglutamyl-beta-naphthylamide hydrolysis, and susceptibility to a set of five antimicrobial agents for differentiating these species and strains within the species. Sixty-eight percent of the ...
متن کاملComparison of Disc Diffusion and E test methods for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Of Vancomycin in Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus Isolated from Blood Culture
Background and Objective: Reliable methods of detection of antimicrobial resistance are of paramount importance in the treatment and management of infections caused by coagulase negative staphylococci (CoNS). The objective of the present study was to compare and evaluate the performance of disc diffusion and E test (Epsilometer test) methods for antimicrobial testing of coagulase ne...
متن کاملCoagulase-negative staphylococci and micrococci in urinary tract infections.
One hundred catalase-positive, coagulase-negative, Gram-positive cocci isolated in significant numbers from the urine of patients with urinary tract infections, provisionally subdivided by their sensitivity to nonoviocin, were classified according to a slightly model version of Baird-Parker's schemes (1965 and 1972). It appeared that strains of Micrococcus were nearly all of sub-group 3, and th...
متن کاملSerological detection of Gram-positive bacterial infection around prostheses.
Coagulase-negative staphylococci produce an exocellular glycolipid antigen which has potential as a serological marker of infection in bone. The value of this newly detected antigen was investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 15 patients with culture-proven infection of prostheses caused by Gram-positive bacteria. The antigen was purified by gel-permeation chromatography fr...
